Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
