The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
