Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the detainment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic party.

Trump's statements coincide with the deployment of state military troops in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of elected officials resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials indicated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" delivered portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were set up in lines. Extra barriers was placed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has intensified deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action against the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for Thursday.

The mayor also issued an directive on Monday banning ICE officers and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for enforcement actions.

The governor has accused Trump of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are defying national authority.

Since starting his second term, Trump has sent or discussed sending military units to at least 10 cities, such as major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is necessary to combat crime and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on Wednesday found that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
