The performer enters the online meeting and immediately starts an excuse. “I can’t believe I’m late!” she states, appearing really remorseful. Although she's only slightly delayed, she wants to clarify. “I tend to talk too much during calls. I had two calls before this, and I’m like, I’ve gotta stop talking!” Thankfully, in this context, that’s precisely what one hopes to experience. Moreover, it’s quite unsurprising. Those familiar with her fearlessly queer and outspoken project Bottoms—that Sennott co-wrote with the director and appeared in together with her friend the talented actress—would already know that she holds much to say, ranging from about gender, sex, or the pros of forming a teen combat group. And, once you finish the recent seasonal HBO series titled I Love LA, viewers realize that she holds even more insights about the challenges of Gen Z life (At 30, Sennott represents a relatable figure of the gang, straddling eras adept for bridging different age groups).

Guiding Lights and Creative Vision

The comparisons to the iconic series Girls are inevitable and the actress readily acknowledges an admirer, referencing it in addition to the HBO hit, Insecure and Donald Glover’s series as inspirations for the project, which tracks the journey of an influencer played by Odessa A’Zion and close companion and fledgling agent Maia. Perhaps, the most significant influence on concept went to the popular sitcom, the program about a rising A-list actor succeeding in a corrupt Hollywood (choice quote: “happiness eludes everyone but failures in this city”). She began viewing it throughout lockdown, became “hooked”, and decided to put her own twist on it “for the girls and the gays”.

“My aim was to focus on digital fame over traditional entertainment, as my own beginnings were on the web,” she explains. The concept for the series originated—in part—from her own, at first rocky, move to Tinseltown and from the saturn return, a popular phenomenon for followers. It was an era that saw her grasp some big truths, in her career and personally. “During my younger years, I was chaotic, often breaking down in public,” she admits. “After relocating to Los Angeles in my mid-twenties, I found stability, only for things to crumble. “It resembled a series of extreme challenges…”

Early Beginnings

Raised in New England, Sennott began writing and performing stand-up while enrolled in theatre at New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts. “I followed traditional paths to get on stage, but nothing clicked,” she states. “Auditions for university comedy troupes led to universal rejection. “None of the university plays cast me either.” “I wondered why I was even there at all.”

She decided to act independently, appearing at live shows with Ayo and posting hilarious (and distinctly) unconventional skits online. One, titled Baby Cult, centered on a group of women intensely drawn to having babies; a different one portrayed working at a trendy retail outlet as like being trapped in a scary movie. Interestingly, she encountered Seligman through campus film circles and eventually featuring in her directorial debut, titled Shiva Baby, an anxious dramedy set at a Jewish wake with shades of the Safdie brothers’ movie. A recurring idea of her path, she says, has been contemporaries offering opportunities, instead of the industry at large. Does that mean bypassing the usual powers? “Definitely not them”, she emphasizes, stating amusedly: “They don’t want us to win.”

Career Breakthrough

Those who were skeptical regarding her then will certainly be kicking themselves currently. As part of she calls a “wild, full-circle” story, she appears to manifested her dream vehicle. In 2019 she shared content called about Los Angeles on social media, in which she parodied Hollywood trailers (“Substance abuse is rampant here”).
