No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
