Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
